About Light scattering
Our take, based on listings data and supplier feedback.
What it is. Light scattering is a key category of laboratory instrumentation, used across clinical, pharmaceutical, environmental, and academic research labs for a wide range of analytical and sample-handling applications.
Common instrument types. The light scattering category spans several instrument families and configurations, each suited to specific throughput, sensitivity, and budget requirements, from entry-level benchtop units to high-end systems.
Buying via Questpair. Refurbished and used light scattering instruments hold their value thanks to robust build quality and global service networks. Sourcing through Questpair gives buyers verified supplier credentials, standardized condition reporting, and side-by-side offers from multiple distributors, so you can compare price, condition, and warranty in one place.
Best for. Light scattering equipment is an excellent fit for analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical QC, environmental and food testing, and high-throughput research labs that need reliable instrumentation with strong long-term serviceability.
Light scattering is one of the most widely deployed instrument categories in analytical and life-science labs. In the refurbished and used market, light scattering instruments retain their value well thanks to build quality, global service networks, and broad adoption in regulated environments. Frequently asked questions
What is static light scattering?
In Static Light Scattering (SLS) laser light is aimed at a sample, and the intensity of the scattered light is measured under different angles. From SLS measurements, the radius of gyration of molecules and the diameter of small particles can be determined. From measuring the scattering profile of a sample at different concentrations the second virial coefficient can be calculated.
What is dynamic light scattering?
Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) is a technique to study the diffusive behaviour of large molecules and small particles. A sample is illuminated with a monochromatic light source that is passed through a polarisation filter and then into a sample. The scattered light coming out of the sample then passes through a second polariser after which it falls on a detector and an image is recorded. When the technique is used to analyse temporal fluctuations it is also known as Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (PCS) because the time correlations can be used to determine a diffusion coefficient of particles or macromolecules exhibiting Brownian motion.
