Perkin Elmer Model 343 S Polarimeter

The Perkin Elmer Model 343 S Polarimeter is an essential tool for the analysis and study of optically active substances. It is widely used in the characterization of newly synthesized compounds, quality control of pharmaceutical drugs, precise quantitative analysis of sugars, selective detection of optically active components by HPLC, and monitoring and control of enzymatic reactions.
This automatic precision polarimeter employs the optical null principle through the rotation of the analyzer and features automatic gain control. It utilizes a Na spectral lamp with selectable spectral lines (Na 589 nm) which can be chosen from the instrument keypad. The device accommodates both standard and microcell apertures. The photomultiplier detector used is the 1P28A, and the polarizers and analyzers are Vis-transmitting. The instrument offers a rotatory range of ± 85° and a balancing speed of 1.3°/s at 50 Hz and 1.5°/s at 60 Hz. It promises accuracy within ± 0.002° for rotations ≤1° and ± 0.2% for rotations greater than 1°, with reproducibility better than 0.002° for zero and rotational readings and an internal angular resolution of 1 x 10-4 °.

Integration times are selectable, ranging from 0.1s to 100s. Autozero settings can be electronically controlled from the instrument keypad within any desired position in the rotatory range. The user can interact with the device via menu-driven integrated touch-keys available in multiple languages or through PC control using POL WinLab or POL WinLab ES software. Results are displayed on a stand-alone vacuum fluorescence display with two lines of 20 characters each, and the format of results is selectable, including angular rotation, specific rotation, molar rotation, international sugar scale, and user-defined scales with factor and offset. The instrument’s dimensions are 825 x 310 x 390 mm, and it weighs 40 kg.
