The Perkin Elmer 343 Polarimeter provides an essential tool for assessing and analyzing optically active substances. It is extensively utilized for characterizing newly synthesized compounds, quality control of pharmaceutical drugs, performing precise quantitative analysis of sugars, selectively detecting optically active components by HPLC, and monitoring enzymatic reactions.
This automatic precision polarimeter operates on an optical null principle with analyzer rotation and automatic gain control. It features a Na spectral lamp for radiation, with selectable Na 589 nm spectral lines. The instrument allows for configurable apertures suited for standard cells and microcells, while the detection is managed by the photomultiplier 1P28A, supported by Vis-transmitting polarizers.
The polarimeter boasts a rotatory range of ± 85° and a balancing speed reaching up to 1.5°/s. It achieves remarkable accuracy of ± 0.002° for rotations ≤1º, and ± 0.2% for those exceeding 1°. Reproducibility surpasses expectations with a better-than 0.002° mark.
Users benefit from internal angular resolution at 1 x 10^-4º, and a variety of integration times ranging from 0.1s to 100s. The autozero setting is conveniently executed electronically and supports interaction in multiple languages via integrated touch-keys or through PC-controlled software, such as POL WinLab.
The stand-alone operation is facilitated by a vacuum fluorescence display. Results are provided in a variety of formats, including angular rotation, specific rotation, molar rotation, and custom scales.
With dimensions of 825 x 310 x 390 mm and weighing 40 kg, the Perkin Elmer 343 is designed for universal applicability in sophisticated settings demanding accuracy and reliability.

A polarimeter is an instrument used to measure the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of a light beam passing through a sample of an optically active substance. It is used to measure the optical activity of a substance, which is a measure of its ability to rotate the plane of polarization of a beam of light. The instrument consists of a light source, a polarizer, a sample cell, and a detector. The sample cell is placed between the polarizer and the detector, and the light passing through the sample is measured by the detector. The angle of rotation is then calculated from the difference between the light intensity before and after passing through the sample.

A polarimeter is an instrument used to measure the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of a light beam passing through an optically active substance. It is used to measure the optical activity of a sample, which is a measure of the ability of the sample to rotate the plane of polarization of a light beam. The most common type of polarimeter is the optical polarimeter, which uses a light source and a polarizing filter to measure the angle of rotation. Other types of polarimeters include the mechanical polarimeter, which uses a mechanical device to measure the angle of rotation, and the electronic polarimeter, which uses electronic components to measure the angle of rotation.
