Melting point analysers

A melting point analyser determines the temperature at which a substance changes from the solid to the liquid phase. For pure substances, this is a well-defined point whereas it becomes a range for mixtures. Melting point analysers are used in research and pharmaceutical industry to quickly determine the purity of a substances and products. For some devices the sample is loaded in a sealed capillary which is then hea (more)ted. The melting point can be observed by eye through a little window. Modern devices measure it automatically by detecting changes in light transmission at or near the melting point. For many instruments it is also possible to program the beginning and final temperature and the temperature gradient. Some instruments also can measure the boiling point, cloud point and slip melting point.
