Photolithography is a process used in the fabrication of integrated circuits (ICs) and other microstructures. It is a photochemical process that uses light to transfer a geometric pattern from a photomask (also called an optical mask) to a light-sensitive chemical (photoresist) on the substrate. The process is used to create very small patterns on the surface of the substrate. The photoresist is then developed to create the desired pattern on the substrate. Photolithography is used in the manufacture of semiconductor devices such as transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits. It is also used in the production of flat panel displays, optical components, and other micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS).
