The QIAsymphony SP automates nucleic acid purification using magnetic-particle technology and processes up to 24 samples per batch. It integrates several components:
- Lysis station
- 4-channel pipetting system
- Robotic gripper
- Magnetic rods with protective rod covers to pick up/release magnetic particles in sample prep cartridges
Protocols preinstalled enable purification of RNA, genomic DNA, and viral/bacterial nucleic acids. Reagents come in prefilled sealed cartridges loaded into drawers alongside consumables. A touchscreen interface allows protocol selection and run initiation. Automated inventory scans ensure proper setup before and during runs.
The QIAsymphony AS automates assay setup with a 4-channel pipetting system controlled via the QIAsymphony SP touchscreen. It supports:
- Single or multiple assay runs
- Preparation or premixing of master mixes
- Predefined protocols called Assay Definitions and configurable Assay Parameter Sets specific to QIAGEN kits
Assay run data and protocol files are transferable via USB ports. The touchscreen aids in displaying run progress and calculating necessary consumables. Automated inventory scans verify drawer setups and allow tip reload during runs.
The system offers two operation modes:
- Integrated mode: Direct sample transfer from SP to AS via an internal module, reducing manual steps and documentation
- Independent mode: SP and AS units operate separately for flexible workflow adaptation
