VICI PDDs employ a stable, low-power pulsed DC discharge in helium to enable ionization. The flowing eluants are ionized by helium discharge photons, with the resulting electrons being directed by bias electrodes toward the collector electrode. This process effectively generates quantifiable detector output with performance equal to or surpassing conventional radioactive source detectors.

In electron capture mode, PDDs are selective detectors for high electron affinity compounds such as freons, chlorinated pesticides, and other halogen compounds, with a minimum detectable quantity down to femtogram or picogram levels. These detectors operate at temperatures up to 400°C, requiring He and CH4 to be introduced upstream from the column exit.

In helium photoionization mode, the PDD serves as a universal, non-destructive, high-sensitivity detector. It provides a linear response for both inorganic and organic compounds across a wide range, and detects fixed gases with a minimum detectable quantity in the low ppb range. This mode effectively replaces flame ionization detectors in environments like petrochemical or refinery settings, where flame and hydrogen use pose challenges. Furthermore, doping the helium discharge gas with noble gases like argon, krypton, or xenon allows the PDD to operate as a specific photoionization detector, selectively determining aliphatics, aromatics, and amines.

These detectors are available for use with both 110 VAC and 230 VAC power supplies.
